Achingly beautiful. While it plays with fairy tale tropes, I was enthralled by this often hypnotic period horror and had no idea where it would go next. A treatise on mothers and daughters, gender divisions, and even what it means to be loved and to be human after being denied humanity.
Dedicated, lived-in performances are complimented by a chill-inducing score, evocative, often handheld camera work, and visceral moments of gory dismemberment.
And the ending is very satisfying. There could easily have been a version of this where things either end tragically or ambiguously, but writer/director Goran Stolevski gives us an ending to cheer for and a big ‘fuck you’ to a spiteful, envious witch.
