A mixing of horror and wartime drama. There's some genuinely disturbing imagery; in particular a beast with a huge set of chompers. What halts Under the Shadow from being a truly classic horror is what also makes it unique. Perhaps if Babak Anvari had gone for a more visceral, rollercoaster ride of terror like James Wan might've done, it could've been overwhelmingly terrifying. As it is, there's plenty of mayhem, but it feels a bit too understated and takes a while to deliver the goods, which is also forgivable because of the style and artistry on display.
