The Oracle (1985)

nickkarner

A forgotten 80’s occult horror curio from legendary adult filmmaker Roberta Findlay. I first became aware of this gritty, NYC-based flick when its trailer was shown during a double bill revival screening of Burial Ground and Zombie Holocaust. The trailer does a masterful job of selling the film as a wonder of batshit insanity but the subsequent movie isn’t nearly as exciting. Lead actress Caroline Capers Powers, in her film debut and swan-song, has one of the most annoying screams I’ve ever heard. Remember that weird yipping sound Lin Shaye makes in Dumb & Dumber? Multiply that by a thousand.

The music is terrible, the acting is stiff, and the plot becomes steadily more unbelievable and nonsensical. Despite these shortcomings, Findlay does know how to make a movie. The gore effects are cool, the photography is competent despite some wonky framing here and there, and it chugs along at a solid pace.
