Splatter: Naked Blood (1996)

This is a ‘yell at the screen’ movie.

“No…no, no, no! Don’t-NOOOOO!”

What makes Hisayasu Sato's extraordinary body horror so effective is that he takes an austere, even classy approach to a ludicrous, quasi-science fiction concept. Tragedy and loneliness are seriously explored and the very real pains of regret and loss are contemplated. Everything is presented in a spare, matter-of-fact mise-en-scene which lulls the viewer into thinking that perhaps this movie's exploitative title might be overdoing it a bit. But nay nay! The gentle nature of the first half is a ruse to deliver the maximum level of shock as the film shifts into shocking scenes of ultraviolence.
